"B/172", octagonal marking, 3 strikes on India 1856/64, 2 a. yellow, 8 a. carmine and 1860, 8 p. mauve, all tied additionally with red Singapore merchant's chop, on letter sheet endorsed "Via Marseilles" to England with arrival mark of September 30 1865. A scarce and delightful cover

2,50 r. brown-purple used on registered envelope 8 c. from "MAURITIUS JY 21 95" to Switzerland, showing clear strike of rare "A.R.", red "REGISTERED MAURITIUS" and French paquebot mark "LA REUNION A MARSEILLE L.V.No.4", also on reverse large red seal cancel "GENERAL POST OFFICE MAURITIUS" and arrival mark; a rare stamp on cover and earliest recorded use of the "A.R." marking Provenance: Peter Jaffé (2007)
